Public Housing was established by the U.S. Housing Act of 1937. The purpose of the Act was to provide homes for those of low and moderate income and to provide jobs for the unemployed. The Housing Authority of the City of Westwego ("Westwego Housing Authority" or "WHA"), was founded 1959, and now has 300 low rent units for residents of the city of Westwego.
Westwego Housing Authority consists of 300 Low Rent units. Eighty eighty 1 bedroom units, eighty eight 2 bedroom units, eighty eight 3 bedroom units, fourteen 4 bedroom units, twenty two efficiency units and 17 handicap units. We also have elderly units.
